Next week, we will be attending our first BMS dinner with the seniors. The theme is vintage.
Like WTF? IMO (in my opinion) vintage is more suitable for casual but if it's the Malay vintage, I guess it's quite acceptable as the Malay clothes like the 'nyonya kebaya' is still considered as formal. But I had tried so hard to put away the thoughts of Malay Vintage from my mind because it is so cliche. Again, my opinion.
So some people thought that this theme is my 'thing' since I like to dress up quite english vintage-y when I go to class. Yep I admit that I wore long skirt before but some of my styles are english vintage, and some of them are quite preppy-ish also. Knowing that I would be wearing vintage for the so-called 'formal' dinner really F me up because I've got no inspiration at all when thinking about it.
V.I.N.T.A.G.E. The first time they announced that it's going to be vintage, I was straight away thinking that the style would be from 20's, 40's, 60's and 80's.
Although I study the history of fashion more that anything else, I am not that familiar with the vintage history at all. But I guess the 'flashes' of some vintage clothings in my mind is actually the memories that I've either had or watched before.
1920's Fashion
So speaking of 20's I'd imagined this

1928

Gabrielle 'Coco' Chanel
1940's Fashion
For 40-50's fashion, I started to think of John Galliano (ex-designer for Dior) because it was the year for tight-waist and full skirt clothings.

Dior 1954
I don't know how I know about 40's fashion, maybe because I had been the John Galliano's biggest fan for a while. Seriously, speaking of 40's it reminded me of his Haute Couture Spring Summer 2011 collection, which is my favourite runway show of the season.
1960's Fashion
In the 60's fashion, the style had completely reminded me of Twiggy, a legendary fashion model, that change the fashion industry from showing curves to thin and androgynous look. And she was rocking the mod style as well.

Twiggy
The Beatles
I mean the mod style (color blocking and short, shapeless dress) really had influenced me a lot. Whenever people talking about vintage, it reminds me of this style. So it is very hard for me to go digging for some vintage items in my local store if what I could only think of is a short dress. I would never wear leggings, and if I wear with jeans than it will not look mod at all.
1980's Fashion
For 1980's style, one word- Heathers (1989) movie. Everything is oversized. Also because it's the time where our moms were at the age of 20-30, so it was the time where they can be fashionable and stuff. Haven't you all look at your mom's old photos? So I think the 80's style is pretty close to our heart actually.
I watched this movie for many times and it's probably the origin of Mean Girls movie that we watched nowadays. Also, Christian Slater is the hottest thing on earth!

So these are solely my opinion about the style in the following timeline. Again, I am not so good at fashion history especially vintage, but when I did my research just now in http://winifredandbance.com/ (this website tells you about fashion history including the effect of World War II) about the 20's, 40's, 60's and 80's fashion, my point of view is the same as what they wrote. Thankfully I'm still on the right track.
But vintage as a theme? gives me headache.
